POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENTS:
Policies and Practices

An NSF Workshop

November 15-17, 2004
National Science Foundation
Arlington, Virginia

Organizers

Robert L. Lichter, Merrimack Consultants, LLC
Joy Frechtling, Westat

Workshop Steering Committee

Timothy Anderson, University of Florida
Keith Micoli, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Miriam Rafailovich, State University of New York at Stony Brook
Robert Sellers, University of Michigan
James Siedow, Duke University

Workshop Writer

Kevin Finneran

Workshop Goal

The goal of the Workshop is to explore and design strategies and measures to clarify the postdoctoral appointment and its role in scientific training by eliciting perspectives from all stakeholders. This effort will inform how NSF can address the quality of postdoctoral appointments—especially aspects intended to improve the preparation of postdoctoral researchers ("postdocs") for professional careers—while discerning and avoiding undesirable and unintended consequences. Because the postdoctorate commonly is the last step before a new scientist, engineer, or educator enters into an independent professional career, and because of the need to strengthen and diversify the scientific and technical workforce and leadership in the United States, attention to the postdoctoral experience represents a particularly important and timely opportunity.
